The nest can be saturated with a liquid insecticide such as Sevin or Dursban. For ants that disappear into a wall, he said, the location of the nest can sometimes be determined by tapping along the baseboard and listening for a ''hollow'' spot.

It is even possible, Dr. Potter said, for the ants to give themselves away.
Once located, he said, the nest can be ''dusted'' by drilling holes into the wall at the suspected location and three feet to either side and then ''puffing'' carbaryl dust Sevin or boric acid into the holes. If the material does not come in a container made for puffing, an old plastic mustard or ketchup squirter -- which should be clearly marked as containing insecticide -- will do.
Another way to deal with interior infestation is to prevent succeeding generations of ants from getting in the house in the first place. Once it is determined where the ants are getting into the house, he said, it is often possible to follow the ants' trail back to the main colony.
It is then possible, he said, to treat both the main colony and the perimeter of the house by drenching or spraying with an exterior insecticide. Jacobs said, adding that the insecticide Dursban contains such material.
It is also necessary, he said, to avoid storing wood against or near the house and to trim back any tree branches or hedges that touch the house because they can create a bridge for the ants to use to avoid the insecticide. Homeowners should also insure that hoses are kept rolled up rather than allowed to lie on the lawn and provide a convenient route directly from the lawn to the hole in the foundation where the pipe emerges. Jacobs said.
